Gathering Around the Table

Hospitality at home is an art that transforms a simple space into a welcoming haven. Our dining table has always been my absolute favorite piece of furniture in our home. We’ve owned a few different tables over the years, but it’s never been about the table itself. Our table has always been a special place holding countless cherished moments and has been the most important place to gather in our home. Inviting others to sit around our table has been a way of life for us. Sometimes that meant squeezing in as many chairs as we could find, while other times it was just Mike and me with a few guests.

We’ve shared many moments with longtime friends, new friends, or even the occasional unexpected visitor – each with their own unique story to tell! Each took a seat, drew in a deep breath, settled in and relaxed a bit. There is something special when you can hear people sigh out loud. It’s the anticipation of slowing down, sharing life and eating some good food and having conversations together. Sometimes those conversations bring tears, laughs or even both. Those are the heartfelt connections. 

I can’t ignore that the kitchen plays a crucial role in making the table experience complete. For some, cooking can feel overwhelming, while for others, it’s a source of creativity. For me, it’s a bit of both. I find cooking to be life-giving and enjoyable, but not always! Creating something beautiful and delicious to share brings me joy. However, if the day has been too busy, there’s nothing wrong with take-out, right? Thankfully, Detroit offers some fun take-out!

I’d love to share one of my favorite recipes and take-out spots with you and I will do that next time. Until then, consider allowing your table to be a place so powerful and special. It’s a real gift to sense God moving and alive in ourselves and others while sharing a meal around the table. In these moments of togetherness is where we can feel the most alive and connected.
